ICANN is scheduled to reveal the new top-level domain names (gTLDs)

Wednesday is “Reveal Day,” the day ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) will disclose the identities of the 2,000 (potential) new top level domain names (gTLDs). Doug Isenberg of The GigaLawFirm advises trademark owners what to do:

1. Review the list to see if there may be any conflicts with company trademarks;
2. Keep in mind that none of the gTLDs on the list has been approved, so there is time to mount a challenge;
3. Consider if your IP rights are being infringed and discuss with your attorney options, costs, etc;
4. Examine the value of limited protections provided by ICANN’s Trademark Clearinghouse;
5. If needed, examine the protections offered by the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, which all registry operators for new gTLDs will be required to implement.
